The Blue Marble, December 1972
A photograph taken by hand from 29,000 km away.
Taken with a Hasselblad camera through a spacecraft window as Apollo 17 flew to the Moon, "The Blue Marble" was the first fully-lit photograph of Earth ever made by a human being. It has been reproduced more than any other image in history. The mission remains the last time humans travelled beyond low Earth orbit.
Editor's Note
A single photograph can, occasionally, become a memory the whole species shares.
