The Eames Lounge Chair, 1956
Designed as a gift for a friend.
The Eames Lounge Chair began as a private commission for the film director Billy Wilder, a close friend. It took years of prototyping — bending seven-ply moulded plywood, then hand-fitting leather cushions. When Herman Miller finally released it, the price was deliberately high. The Eameses wanted people to keep it a lifetime.
