The librarian who saved a city

During the siege of Sarajevo, one man rescued 10,000 books by candlelight.

As the National Library burned in August 1992, chief librarian Aida Buturović and volunteers formed a human chain under sniper fire to save what they could. Aida was killed carrying manuscripts to safety. The books she rescued now sit in the reopened library — each one a monument to a quiet, deliberate act of courage.

A small note from the MAGAZINIX desk: worth returning to.
