Bibliotheca Alexandrina

The Library of Alexandria burned three times

And each time, was rebuilt.

Historians now believe there was no single catastrophic fire that ended the Library of Alexandria. Instead, over three centuries, war, budget cuts and quiet indifference eroded the greatest collection of knowledge in the ancient world. By the time the library was gone, most of its scrolls had already been lost — one at a time.

Editor's Note

Civilisations rarely fall in a single afternoon. They fade one budget cut at a time.
