The Eiffel Tower opened, 1889
Parisian intellectuals called it "a truly tragic street lamp."
When the Eiffel Tower opened to the public on 31 March 1889, a petition signed by Guy de Maupassant, Charles Gounod and 300 other artists denounced it as a "useless and monstrous" iron chimney. Maupassant reportedly ate lunch in its restaurant daily — the only place in Paris, he said, where he could not see it.
